Individuality and Conformity

There is a lot of tension that exists between conformists and those who wish to be individual.  Sometimes a conformists by some standards can be considered either a team player or even a blind follower.  While an individual can also be considered either an obnoxious deviant or heroic and/or unique.  Each has their own flaws and each can work to either benefit society or bring it down to its knees.  Examples of this are:
  • Nazism and the Holocaust
  • Driving Laws
  • Body Image
  • Clothing Style
  • Classroom
  • Police Presence
  • Music
  • Religion
For each and every one of these that are listed, sometimes it is better to conform.  Sometimes it is so because it helps people.  But other times, it is better to not do so.  Because doing so can cause more pain to those around you, it can push back and lock away into the darkest parts of yourself who you truly are.

In what is a majorly popular experiment to refer back to as well as repeat over again in the field of psychology, Asch Experiment tries to capture and take into account how many people in their control group would conform to the situation they were presented with.

It was discovered that during the beginning of the experiment the test subjects kept to their beliefs and individuality.  But as the experiment continued on, the subjects began to conform to the group that they had been placed in.  Each subject was tested separately from the others within a group made up of actors.  These actors were told to choose incorrect answers every time.  Even if the subject knew otherwise than what was being said by the group, they did not wish to feel left out.

In my own eyes I am not certain as to whether or not I am either a conformist or an individual or even a mixture of the two.  But I can say that I prefer not to "go with the flow" when I comes to clothing style.  I wear the kind of clothes that I like to wear, not those that everyone else does.  Those that people think are the new fashion, the kind of clothing that girl like wearing to make themselves look like sluts.  Do excuse my French.

It's the same with my body image, the girls that you see on the covers of magazines, the size of Popsicle sticks, who wants to be that skinny.  Being that skinny in some peoples' eye may look beautiful, but who would want to be so skinny that they are also so unhealthy?

Thinking about it, it's possible that I'm a bit more of an individual than a conformist.  I think this is a good thing for me in many aspects, but that same individuality could also be turned down a notch.  It's seriously feeding my egotistic pride at times.
